Compliance Requirements in Remote Access

When a security audit reaches remote access, it rarely stays in one lane. The same session log that satisfies a PCI DSS requirement for access monitoring in a cardholder data environment is also the evidence an NIS2 auditor needs under Article 21, and the audit control a HIPAA-covered entity must maintain for systems handling ePHI. Remote access governance is where multiple compliance obligations land on the same infrastructure at the same time. Which means a gap there is rarely a gap under just one framework.

Netop provides controlled, auditable remote access built to satisfy those obligations. Every session is authenticated, authorized, encrypted, and logged. Vendor access is time-bound. Audit trails are tamper-proof. Deployment options keep session data and recordings within the infrastructure required by the organization’s compliance policy.

Why Remote Access Is a High Risk Compliance Gap

VPNs were designed for network connectivity, not access governance. A VPN grants entry to a network segment. It cannot restrict a contractor to a single device, enforce a two-hour maintenance window, or produce a session recording that shows exactly what that contractor did on which system at what time. When a regulator requests evidence of controlled third-party access under NIS2 Article 21, a VPN access log does not satisfy the requirement.

Shared credentials, persistent contractor accounts, and ungoverned vendor sessions create the same evidential gap. The issue is architectural. Most remote access tools were built for IT convenience, and auditability was added later as a feature. For organizations operating under PCI DSS, HIPAA, or NIS2, that sequence matters because the audit trail only holds up if it was built into the system from the start.

The Controls Auditors Look For

Compliance documentation is only as strong as the underlying evidence. These are the Netop capabilities that produce it.

Forensic audit depth

Session recordings capture all keyboard, mouse, and screen activity in sequence. They are tamper-proof, encrypted, and fully replayable. Retention is configurable. Recordings are stored across local, SIEM, and cloud destinations simultaneously. If recording fails for any reason, the session is interrupted automatically — the architecture does not permit an unlogged session to proceed.

Vendor and contractor access is governed by policies that define which device can be reached, from which IP range, within which time window. A four-eyes approval requirement can be applied to high-risk sessions, meaning a designated supervisor must accept the connection before it opens. There is no blanket access grant.

Access authorization expires at the end of the defined window without requiring manual revocation. Federated identity integration means a departed employee or an expired contractor loses access when their account is deprovisioned in the identity provider, not when someone remembers to update a remote access policy.

Audit data, session recordings, and logs stay within whatever infrastructure the organization’s compliance policy requires. Netop On-Premises keeps everything internal. Netop Sovereign Portal and Netop Self-Hosted Portal provide customer-controlled infrastructure. For EU data residency requirements, the Netop SaaS Portal runs on AWS within the EU.

A live endpoint dashboard shows all active sessions, online and offline endpoints, and currently deployed permissions. Any session can be terminated instantly via kill-switch without physical access to the device. This is an operational requirement under NIS2 Article 11, not a convenience feature

Access Compliance Resources by Framework

EU Network and Information Security Directive

Remote access intersects with five NIS2 obligations under Article 21: supply chain security, network security, encryption, access control, and incident reporting. This whitepaper works through each requirement and maps it to the specific Netop control that addresses it.

Following close collaboration with Netop’s trusted partners across EMEA, Akeydor and Micromouse, the paper is now available in 4 languages.

Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification

Defense industrial base organizations subject to CMMC can use Netop’s controlled remote access architecture to meet access control and audit requirements at the relevant maturity level.

Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard

Netop’s access controls, session logging, and MFA enforcement address PCI DSS requirements for access monitoring in cardholder data environments.
